In the absence of public based funding for culture, contemporary art sits in a precarious zone between a commercially driven international art market and the pressing desire by artists to explore challenging means of expression. Particularly in the realm of technologically based media arts, cost and access questions block the emergence of a secure and critical practice. The latter is increasingly left up to the independent or non-commercial gallery whose own existence depends entirely on the availability of private funding sources. Given the political implications of technologically oriented art and the omnipresent battle between the independence of expression over aggressive market forces, how and where can a truly creative and unique media landscape emerge in China?
